October is here!

We have so many exciting things planned for this month.

Our theme is Fall/Harvest.

Many of the classrooms will be exploring gourds, pumpkins, and fall leaves.

We hope you will check our calendar to see all of the events coming up! Here are some highlights:

All month long we are collecting gently-used blankets for The St. Francis House. We will continue to collect gently-used coats (all sizes) as well. The coats are being donated to the Children's Home Society.

October 9th - Ice Cream Social for all students and parents on Tuesday, October 9th from 6:45pm-7:45pm. Feel free to bring in a topping to share. The hope is to have families bring in toppings PRIOR to October 9th. Before the social starts, the teachers and directors will set up an "Ice Cream Bar" along the front walkway in front of the classrooms. Children and parents can select their ice cream and cruise along the bar adding toppings! What fun! All of the teachers and directors and their families will be there to enjoy the night!

October 10th - The firemen are coming to school! They will be visiting classrooms to talk about fire safety and showing the children their equipment. One thing they like to show children is how they might appear all dressed in their heavy gear. It's important for the children to know that a fireman covered with his breathing apparatus and heavy helmet and coat is NOT scary. He is there to help them in case of emergencies.  The firemen will also give the children a tour of their truck! We can't wait!
If you are a parent of a child at St. Michael's, feel free to ask your child's teachers if they would like you to volunteer on this day. We will need help managing the children around the fire truck. And it's a great opportunity for photos! Plus, who doesn't love seeing a firetruck up close?

October 17th - Our next Zaxby's spirit night is coming up! Enjoy dinner at Zaxby's on this night and a portion of the proceeds goes directly to St. Michael's! Typically each spirit night raises over $200 for the school!

October 29th - November 2nd - Book Fair is coming! The Scholastic Book Fair takes place three times a year at our school. The book fair will be set up in the Day School Office. You are welcome to shop just after drop-off or just after pick-up. Books make great birthday and holiday gifts! If you want to keep your purchase a secret from your child, just shop after you drop them off in the morning!  The children will be visiting the book fair during school hours to make a wish list too! You can shop with your child during our Fall Festival too!

November 2nd - Speaking of Fall Festival, it is fast approaching! During Fall Festival our classrooms are closed and our playground is transformed into a carnival!! There is not school on this day and all activities are parent-directed. You will take your child to each of the games/activities and help them to enjoy each one. After they participate you may help them choose ONE prize. They will have a specially-decorated bag to collect all of their prizes. Activities include: bean bog toss, fishing pond, fun tunnel, face painting, buried treasure and MORE!

We will also have a cake walk. Each try at the cake walk will cost 50 cents. The cake walk is the only activity that costs money.

During the Fall Festival we will be selling St. Michael's Day School t-shirts and magnets AND we will have a silent auction. Each classroom is putting together a themed basket to be autioned off. We are also looking for other donated items such as gift cards; donated products such as Mary Kay, Creative Memories, Pampered Chef, and thirty-one. If you know someone that sells these types of items you can ask them to donate an item to our auction. Please see Ms. Kelly if you have any questions.

All of the money we raise during this event goes directly to our school!

We want to thank all of the families that donated coats and blankets so far. Ms. Kelly will be letting us know how many coats we have collected. I know there were several large bags in her office!

We also want to thank the many parents and grandparents that have taken time to volunteer in the classroom.  We truly enjoy having you join us. Your children are always very happy and proud when you visit. We also thank you for the various supplies you have donated. It may seem odd for us to ask you for rice, pumpkins, and sand. Please know that each item helps us to create a fun, enriching, engaging experience for your children.

Several of you have inquired about the Play Sand. We are hoping to fill up our playground sand box with more sand. By purchasing one 50lb bag of play sand from Lowes, Home Depot or Wal-Mart you can help us make our sandbox a bit more enticing!

Thank you for reading our blog. We hope you have a great October!

Ms. Karen (assistant teacher in 5-day VPK)
